Description

Julia Domna, denarius, silver, reign 196-211, minted 196-211, weight 3.20 g, diameter 18 mm. Obverse: Draped bust right, legend IVLIA AVGVSTA. Reverse: Isis, wearing polos, standing right, resting left foot on prow, holding infant Horus at breast and patera; rudder leaning against altar behind, legend SAECVLI FELICITAS. Strike: Well-centered with complete legends visible. Toning: Light even silver-gray tone. References: RIC IV Septimius Severus 577. Julia Domna was the wife of Septimius Severus and served as Augusta during his reign and that of her sons Caracalla and Geta. The SAECVLI FELICITAS type on this coin reflects imperial propaganda promoting a prosperous and stable era under the Severan dynasty. The imagery of Isis nursing Horus was derived from Egyptian religious iconography and was incorporated into Roman coinage to convey themes of fertility, protection, and dynastic continuity. This type was issued during a period of consolidation of power following the Severan rise after the civil wars, and it illustrates both religious syncretism and the political messaging prevalent in Rome at the time.
