Description
Marcus Aurelius, denarius, silver, reign 161–180, minted 179–180, 3.20 g, diameter 18 mm. Obverse: Laureate and cuirassed bust right; legend M AVREL ANTONINVS AVG TR P XXXIIII IMP X COS III P P. Reverse: Fortuna seated left on low seat, draped, holding rudder set on ground in right hand and cornucopiae in left; wheel beneath seat; legend as per RIC III Marcus Aurelius 409. Strike: Well-centered strike with full legends visible. Toning: Light grey toning with minor darker areas in recessed fields. References: RIC III Marcus Aurelius 409. This denarius was issued during the later years of Marcus Aurelius’ reign, in 179–180, when the emperor was engaged in the concluding phases of the Marcomannic Wars along the Danube frontier. The obverse legend records his tribunician power for the 34th time, his tenth acclamation as imperator, and his third consulship, placing the coin’s production firmly in this period. The reverse depiction of Fortuna with rudder and cornucopiae, and a wheel beneath the seat, symbolizes stability, prosperity, and guidance. Such imagery was used to reinforce the concept of imperial control over the fate of the Roman state during a time of military campaigns and political transition.
