Description
Septimius Severus, denarius, silver, reign 193–211, minted 202–210, weight 3.25 g, diameter 18 mm. Obverse: Laureate bust right; legend SEVERVS PIVS AVG. Reverse: Emperor, veiled and togate, standing left, holding branch in right hand and roll in left; legend FVNDATOR PACIS. Strike: Centrally struck with full details visible. Toning: Light cabinet toning with even silver coloration. References: RIC IV Septimius Severus 265. The denarius type with the reverse legend FVNDATOR PACIS was issued under Septimius Severus during the later years of his reign, between 202 and 210, likely in connection with his political message of having restored peace to the Roman Empire after the civil wars of 193–197. The veiled and togate depiction of the emperor on the reverse symbolizes his role as a statesman and bringer of stability, rather than solely as a military commander. This coin type reflects Severus's efforts to legitimize his rule through propaganda emphasizing order and continuity, issued from the Rome mint during a period of consolidation of power and imperial authority.
