Description

Aurelian, Antoninianus, Billon, minted in Antioch, 270-275 CE. Weight: 4.08g, typical diameter: 23mm. The obverse features the radiate and cuirassed bust of Emperor Aurelian facing right, inscribed with "IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG." The reverse depicts the personification of the World, RESTITVT ORBIS, with the emperor standing left, holding a globe and a sceptre. The strike is well-centered, exhibiting clear details typical of Antioch's mint. Referenced as RIC V Aurelian 386.

During Aurelian’s short but impactful reign, he worked to consolidate and restore the empire following the Crisis of the Third Century, a period of severe instability. He earned the title "Restitutor Orbis" for his efforts in reunifying the Roman Empire by defeating the breakaway Gallic Empire and the Palmyrene Empire, thus playing a pivotal role in reestablishing Roman hegemony during an era marked by division and external threats.
