Description

Aurelian, Antoninianus, Billon, struck during the reign of Aurelian (270-275 AD) in Antioch. Weight: 4.30g, Diameter: 22mm. The obverse of this coin features the legend "IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG" and a radiate, cuirassed bust of Emperor Aurelian facing right. On the reverse, the legend "RESTITVT ORBIS" is present, showcasing the personification of the world being restored by Aurelian, represented as a female figure standing left, holding a globe and a sceptre. The strike is well-centered with gentle wear, typical for Billon issues of this era. Referenced as RIC V Aurelian 386.

This coin belongs to the period when Aurelian reestablished Roman control over several breakaway kingdoms and stabilized the Empire through his military prowess and administrative reforms. The reverse type "Restitutor Orbis" signals Aurelian's success in reuniting the Roman Empire, reflecting his title as the "Restorer of the World." The Antoninianus, a common denomination of the time, serves as a testament to both the economic conditions and political propaganda of the era.
