Description

Aurelian, Antoninianus, Billon, reign 270-275, minted in Antioch. Weight is 3.64 grams, with a typical diameter of approximately 22 mm. The obverse features the inscription "IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG," depicting a radiate and cuirassed bust of Aurelian facing right. The reverse bears the legend "RESTITVT ORBIS," illustrating a female figure standing left, holding a wreath and scepter. This strike is well-centered with minor signs of circulation wear, retaining significant detail. Referenced in RIC V Aurelian 386.

Aurelian's reign marked a transformative era for the Roman Empire, primarily due to his military successes and strategic reforms. His efforts to restore the empire culminated in the celebrated reunification of its fragmented territories, an achievement commemorated with the "Restitutor Orbis" (Restorer of the World) motif on this coin. This period was pivotal in re-establishing Roman authority over separatist governments, notably the Palmyrene Empire and the Gallic Empire, fortifying imperial cohesion and stability amid prior chaos.
