Description

Heraclius, with Heraclius Constantine and Heraclonas, Solidus, AU, 610-641, minted in Constantinople. Weight: 4.43g, Diameter: 20mm. The obverse features a detailed depiction of Emperor Heraclius centrally positioned between his sons, Heraclius Constantine on the left and Heraclonas on the right, all standing and facing forward, each adorned with a crown. Notably, each figure holds a globe without a cross, a unique feature of this mint. The reverse displays the legend VICTORIA AVςЧ with traditional motifs, illustrating a strong strike with well-preserved details amid the high points. The coin shows a light grafitto, typical of handling in antiquity. This specimen is referenced as Sear 761, harmonizing with established catalogues.

The solidus of Heraclius, together with his sons, bears historical significance as it reflects the Byzantine Empire's political landscape during a period marked by significant military and theological challenges. Heraclius's reign was notable for the introduction of Greek titles on coinage, departing from traditional Latin, indicative of the empire's cultural shift. This coin type, featuring imperial unity through the depiction of future heirs, underscores the attempt to solidify dynastic succession amid external pressures from the Persian Empire and rising Islamic forces.
