Minted at Rome during Commodus’s twelfth tribunician year, this issue followed his adoption of the victory title BRIT after the suppression of unrest in Britain in AD 184. The reverse legend “Pater Senatus” presents the emperor as father of the Senate, projecting civil authority and harmony while tension between Commodus and the senatorial order was in fact increasing. The titulature listing tribunician, imperatorial, and consular powers allows dating to 186–187. Denarii of this period illustrate the gradual silver debasement characteristic of late Antonine coinage and circulated broadly across the western provinces, providing contemporary propaganda that linked military success with senatorial guardianship.
