Description
Antoninus Pius, denarius, silver, reign 138-161, struck 145-161, weight 3.4 g, diameter 18 mm. Obverse: laureate bust right; legend ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XXII. Reverse: Antoninus Pius, veiled and draped, standing left, sacrificing with patera over tripod-altar; roll in left hand; a bull recumbent beside the altar; legend VOTA SOL DECENN II COS IIII. Strike: well-centered on a round flan, full legends visible. Toning: uniform light grey with subtle golden highlights. References: RIC III 292A; BMCRE 1023; RSC 1120; noted as rare in standard catalogues. This denarius commemorates vows (vota) undertaken by Antoninus Pius for a second ten-year period of rule, indicated by the reverse legend VOTA SOL DECENN II and the emperor’s fourth consulship (COS IIII, dated 145 AD). The veiled portrait on the reverse emphasizes the emperor’s priestly role, while the bull and altar reference the sacrificial ceremonies conducted to renew these vows. Issued at the Rome mint, the coin belongs to the later part of Antoninus Pius’s reign, when imperial propaganda focused on stability and religious observance rather than military conquest. Denarii of this series provide evidence for the chronological sequence of the emperor’s tribunician powers (TR P XXII) and contribute to dating other issues across the empire.
