Description

Nero, Tetradrachm, Silver (AR), Reign of Nero (54-68 AD), Minted in Antioch. Weight: 14.59g, Diameter: 28mm.

The obverse features the inscription ΝΕΡΩΝΟΣ ΚΑΙΣΑΡΟΣ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΥ, encircling the laureate head of Emperor Nero facing right. On the reverse, an eagle is depicted standing left on a thunderbolt, its wings partially spread, with a palm branch positioned to the left. While the exact dating of the coin remains uncertain due to the off-flan placement, its striking aligns with other tetradrachms from this period. References include RPC I, 4180-4190. The Antioch mint was a crucial location for coin production during Nero's reign, reflecting the emperor's control over the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. Tetradrachms minted here often circulated widely in the region, providing insight into Roman economic and political influence. Nero's rule was marked by significant administrative and financial reforms, and coins like these represent the tangible remnants of his authority and the prominence of Antioch as a provincial hub.
