Description

Seleucia Pieria, AE20, minted in Seleucia Pieria under Pseudo-Autonomous Authority, 5-12 CE. The coin weighs 6.54g and has a typical diameter of approximately 20mm. The obverse features a detailed laureate head of Zeus facing right, showcasing intricate detailing in the hair and laurel leaves. The reverse bears the inscription ΑΝΤΙΟΧΕΩΝ ΜΗΤΡΟΠΟΛΕΩΣ, ΑΝΤ, surrounded by a laurel wreath. The strike is consistent with pieces from this period, displaying centered motifs and clear legends. Referenced in RPC I, 4265, this piece is a representative example of early Roman provincial bronze coinage.

Historically significant, this coin was minted during the transition from the Seleucid Empire's influence to early Roman provincial control. Seleucia Pieria served as a crucial port city in this era, contributing to trade and cultural exchanges in the Eastern Mediterranean. This coin reflects the syncretism of Greek and Roman cultures, particularly in the use of Greek deities like Zeus on Roman provincials, highlighting the enduring appeal of Hellenistic traditions in the region.
