Description
Geta, Denarius, AR. Reign of Geta, 209-211 AD, minted in Rome. Weight: 3.38 g, Diameter: approximately 19 mm. Obverse features the laureate head of Geta facing right, inscribed "P SEPT GETA PIVS AVG BRIT." Reverse depicts Liberalitas standing left, holding an abacus and cornucopia, with the legend "LIBERALITAS AVG V." This coin is struck with precision on a well-centered flan, displaying minor signs of wear consistent with its age. This specimen corresponds to RIC IV Caracalla 215a (denarius).
Historically, this denarius was issued during the late Roman Imperial period under the reign of Geta, who served as co-emperor alongside his brother Caracalla. The obverse inscription emphasizes Geta's status and lineage, while the reverse highlights the emperor's conferred freedoms and gifts to the people. Coins of this era served as important tools of imperial propaganda, promoting the emperor's benevolence and legitimacy to rule. The Liberalitas on the reverse underscores the imperial generosity during times of political tension following the Severan dynasty’s consolidation of power.
