Description
Mark Antony, Denarius, Silver, Military mint travelling with Mark Antony, 32 BC. Weight: 2.78g, Diameter: 18 mm. The obverse features the inscription "ANT AVG III VIR R P C," indicating Mark Antony as one of the three men for the regulation of the Republic. The reverse depicts a legionary standard, with "LEG [...]" and displays an unreadable legion number, a typical feature for this type issued in the context of Antony's military campaigns. Strike is centered with slight wear visible on the high points. References are uncertain due to the incomplete legion identification.
The legionary denarii issued by Mark Antony were a significant symbol of his military ambitions and authority. These coins funded his army during his conflict with Octavian (later Augustus), a pivotal period leading to the end of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. Despite being minted in vast quantities, their historical context as part of Antony's financing strategy underscores their importance in understanding Roman military and political dynamics during the late Republic.
