The silver denarii of the Celtic Lingones, struck at Langres between 80 and 50 BC, reflect the tribe’s economic and military interaction with Rome during the late Republic. Adopting the weight standard and broad module of Roman denarii allowed local authorities to facilitate trade with Roman merchants and neighbouring Gallic peoples while asserting regional identity through distinct iconography. The helmeted bust echoes contemporary Roman martial imagery, and the dynamic horse on the reverse is a long-standing Celtic symbol of mobility and status. These coins circulated alongside Roman issues in eastern Gaul until the Roman conquest under Caesar integrated the area into the provincial monetary system, after which local autonomous silver coinage ceased.
