Description

Sequani, denarius, silver, reign 27 BC–AD 14, minted 27 BC–AD 14, 3.7 g, 18 mm. Obverse: Celticized head of Roma left, garbled legend SEQVANOIOTVOS around. Reverse: Horse galloping left. Strike: hammered, moderately centered with full flan. Toning: light grey with scattered darker highlights. References: LT 5351; DT 3243; ABT 419; RIG 260. Issued by the Sequani tribe of eastern Gaul during the period immediately preceding Roman consolidation under Julius Caesar. The type copies the Roman denarius format while retaining local artistic conventions, reflecting economic and cultural interaction between Celtic communities and Rome. These coins circulated within the Sequani territory around Besançon and aided in financing resistance and trade during the Gallic Wars (57–50 BC).
