Description
Antoninus Pius, denarius, silver, reign 138-161, minted 159-160, weight 3.30 g, diameter 18 mm. Obverse: laureate head of Antoninus Pius right; legend ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XXIII. Reverse: Felicitas standing facing, head left, holding caduceus in right hand and resting left arm on a column; legend FELIC SAEC COS IIII. Strike: well-centered with full legends; moderate circulation wear on highest reliefs. Toning: light uniform grey with slightly darker recesses. References: RIC III 298; BMC RE 865; RSC 336. Issued late in Antoninus Pius’ reign, the denarius marks his twenty-third tribunician power and fourth consulship. The reverse personification of Felicitas, together with the legend FELIC SAEC, promotes the idea of a fortunate age under his rule, reflecting the relative stability and prosperity of the mid-2nd-century empire. The type belongs to the broader program of silver coinage struck at Rome that emphasized civic virtue and continuity, supporting the ideological message of peaceful succession later fulfilled by Marcus Aurelius.
