Description
Marcus Aurelius, denarius, silver, Caesar under Antoninus Pius, 140-144 CE, 3.20 g, 18 mm. Obverse: bare head of Marcus Aurelius right; legend AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F COS. Reverse: Honos standing left, holding branch in right hand and cornucopia in left; legend HONOS. Strike: hammered, generally well-centered with full legends; moderate high-point wear. Toning: natural light grey with scattered pale gold highlights. References: RIC III Antoninus Pius 422; BMC 7; RSC H 103; standard hoard examples confirm type. Struck at Rome while Marcus Aurelius was Caesar and heir to Antoninus Pius, this denarius promoted the virtue of Honos to associate the young prince with traditional Roman moral qualities. The issue formed part of the regular precious-metal coinage used for civil and military pay, circulating widely across the Empire in mid-2nd-century commerce. Its legends link Marcus directly to his adoptive father Pius, reinforcing dynastic continuity before his accession in 161 CE.
