Description

Septimius Severus, denarius, silver, reign 193-211, minted 193-211, weight 3.10 g, diameter 18 mm. Obverse: inscription L SEPT SEVERVS PER AVG P M IMP XI, laureate bust right. Reverse: inscription PAR AR AD TR P VI COS II P P, Victory, winged and draped, advancing left, holding wreath in extended right hand and palm over left shoulder in left hand. Strike: well-centered on a full round flan, moderate die wear on high points, complete legends. Toning: light even silver-grey with faint gold highlights. References: RIC IV 496A; BMCRE 122; RSC 399; two recorded examples in ACSearch. Issued at Rome during Septimius Severus’s consolidation of power after the civil wars of 193, this denarius forms part of a series that advertises his Parthian and eastern victories. The reverse legend abbreviates Parthia, Arabia, and Adiabene, territories claimed as subdued between 195 and 197, while Victory personifies military success. The obverse titles record his eleventh imperatorial acclamation and sixth tribunician year, situating the issue in 198/199. The coin demonstrates the role of the denarius as the standard silver medium in the early third century and illustrates Severus’s use of numismatic imagery to legitimize his authority and celebrate campaigns that expanded Roman influence in the Near East.
