Description

Constantius II, Siliqua, silver, reign 337–361, minted 347–355, weight 2.2 g, diameter 18 mm. Obverse: Pearl-diademed bust right, legend D N CONSTANTIVS P F AVG. Reverse: Legend VOTIS XX MVLTIS XXX within a laurel wreath. Strike: Well-centered strike on a slightly irregular flan, devices and legends sharp. Toning: Light cabinet toning with uniform pale grey surfaces. References: RIC VIII Antioch 105. Issued during the mid-fourth century monetary reforms, this siliqua reflects Constantius II’s efforts to stabilize the silver coinage after the debasements of prior reigns. The VOTIS XX MVLTIS XXX inscription records vows for twenty years of rule and hopes for thirty, a standard formula celebrating the emperor’s longevity and projecting continued stability. Minted at Antioch, a major administrative and military center of the eastern empire, these coins circulated widely across the eastern provinces and served both as currency and as a medium for imperial propaganda emphasizing legitimacy and continuity during a period marked by dynastic transitions and external pressures on the frontiers.
