Description
Constans, Large AE2, bronze, reign 337-350, minted 337-350, weight 5.0 g, diameter 23 mm. Obverse: bust of Constans, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed, right; legend D N CONSTANS P F AVG. Reverse: Constans standing left on galley, holding phoenix on globe in right hand and standard with Chi-Rho banner in left; seated Victory steering; legend FEL TEMP REPARATIO, mintmark ANB in exergue. Strike: well-centered on a round flan with full legends and moderate die wear. Toning: dark brown patina with lighter high points. References: RIC VIII Antioch 121. The FEL TEMP REPARATIO series was introduced by the sons of Constantine I to announce a “restoration of the times.” The galley type links Constans to maritime control and secure travel, with Victory guiding the imperial ship and a phoenix symbolising eternal renewal. Struck at Antioch, this issue coincided with Constans’s oversight of eastern territories and reflects the dynasty’s Christian policy through the Chi-Rho standard. The coinage was distributed widely, reinforcing Constans’s legitimacy amid shared rule with his brothers and projecting stability during ongoing frontier conflicts.
