Description
Marcus Aurelius, denarius, silver, Caesar under Antoninus Pius, 145–160 CE, 3.30 g, 18 mm. Obverse: bare head of Marcus Aurelius right; legend AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F COS II. Reverse: Honos, draped and togate, standing left, holding up branch in right hand and cornucopia in left; legend HONORI. Strike: well-centered on a round flan with full rims and clear lettering. Toning: light grey with faint golden highlights in recessed areas. References: RIC III Antoninus Pius 429A; BMCRE 853; RSC 66. This denarius was issued while Marcus Aurelius served as Caesar under Antoninus Pius, marking the second consulship of the heir apparent. The reverse type featuring Honos conveyed imperial virtues of honor and generosity, reinforcing the moral image cultivated for the future emperor. Silver issues from this period helped finance regular military and civic expenditures of the mid-Antonine era and circulated widely throughout the western provinces, illustrating the stability and prosperity that characterized the reign of Antoninus Pius and the orderly succession plan leading to Marcus Aurelius’s eventual accession in 161 CE.
