Description
Severus Alexander (AD 222–235), Sestertius, Rome Mint, AD 232; Æ
A large bronze sestertius struck under Emperor Severus Alexander in AD 232 at the Rome mint. His portrait typically appears laureate and draped, facing right, with the legend IMP SEV ALEXANDER AVG. The reverse commonly features themes promoting military strength or civic prosperity—often showing the emperor in military dress, standing or advancing, or deities such as Providentia, Virtus, or Roma, depending on the specific issue. These sestertii are valued for their substantial size, expressive portraits, and historical context during the later Severan period.
