Description

Constantine, follis, bronze, reign 306-337, minted 326-327, weight 3.30 g, diameter 19 mm. Obverse: laureate bust of Constantine facing right, circle legend CONSTANTINVS AVG. Reverse: camp-gate with two turrets, seven stone layers, single star above; legend PROVIDENTIAE AVGG; mintmark ‑•ASIS•- in exergue. Strike: well-centered, full flan, moderate wear on high points. Toning: dark brown patina with lighter earthen highlights in recesses. References: RIC VII Siscia 214, LRBC 754, SRCV 16415. Issued from the Siscia mint shortly after Constantine’s refoundation of Constantinople, this follis belongs to a series emphasizing military security across the Danube frontier. The camp-gate motif, paired with the legend PROVIDENTIAE AVGG, signified imperial provision and readiness, reassuring troops and provincial populations during continued frontier pressures. The coin reflects Constantine’s monetary reform that reduced the follis size and improved bronze output while retaining traditional imagery to link the new regime with established Roman defensive themes.
