Description

Septimius Severus, denarius, silver, reign 193–211, struck 196–197, weight 3.20 g, diameter 19 mm. Obverse: laureate bust right; legend L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIII. Reverse: Securitas seated left holding globe; legend SECVRITAS PVBLICA. Strike: hammered, well centered with complete legends and moderate die wear. Toning: light silver-gray with darker peripheral highlights. References: RIC IV 93; RSC 571; BMCRE 132; SRCV 6338. Issued at Rome shortly after Septimius Severus secured control of the western provinces, this denarius forms part of a series emphasizing stability following the civil conflicts of 193. The reverse personification of Securitas, holding a globe, advertises the emperor’s claim to have restored public safety and world order under his authority. The coin’s legends record his eighth imperial acclamation, allowing precise dating to 196–197 during campaigns against rival claimants and the Parthians. Its production reflects the continued use of the denarius as the principal silver currency and demonstrates the imperial propaganda role of Roman coinage.
