Description
Follis of Constantine I "the Great", minted around 320-324 AD.
Obverse (portrait side)
• Legend: CONSTANTINVS AVG
• Portrait: Laureate head of Constantine I, facing right. The laurel wreath and stern profile are classic for his mid-reign issues.
• Title AVG = Augustus, meaning he was senior emperor at the time.
Reverse (wreath side)
• Legend: D N CONSTANTINI MAX AVG = "Our Lord Constantine, Greatest Augustus"
• Center: VOT / XX inside a laurel wreath.
○ VOT XX = "Vows for 20 years" - These were struck to celebrate Constantine’s vicennalia, the 20th anniversary of his rule.
• Exergue: RQ at the bottom. That’s the mint mark for Rome, Officina Q = 4th workshop of the Rome mint.
• Wreath details: Note the two small medallions with chi-rho-like crosses. Constantine started using Christian symbolism on coins after 312 AD.
