Description
Geta, denarius, silver, reign as Caesar, minted 199-204, weight 3.15 g, diameter 18 mm. Obverse: bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Geta right; legend P SEPT GETA CAES PONT encircling. Reverse: Securitas seated left, holding globe; legend SECVRIT IMPERII. Strike: well-centered on a round flan with complete legends and clear devices. Toning: light gray with subtle golden highlights from cabinet storage. References: RIC IV Geta 20A; RSC 183; BMCRE 224; Cohen 183. Issued while Geta held the junior title of Caesar under his father Septimius Severus and elder brother Caracalla, this denarius forms part of a broader propaganda series emphasizing dynastic stability. The depiction of Securitas with a globe and the legend SECVRIT IMPERII communicated the message that the empire’s safety rested on the Severan succession, reassuring the army and populace during ongoing frontier campaigns. Minted at Rome, the coin circulated widely in daily transactions, helping familiarize subjects with the young prince’s portrait before his anticipated elevation to Augustus, which occurred briefly in 209.
