Description

Julia Domna, denarius, silver, reign 196-211, minted 196-211, weight 3.20 g, diameter 18 mm. Obverse: IVLIA AVGVSTA; draped bust right, hair in layered waves and bun. Reverse: FORTVNAE FELICI; Fortuna seated left on throne, holding cornucopia in left hand and rudder set on globe in right; small child (Genius) standing before. Strike: centrally struck on round flan, full obverse and reverse legends visible, minor softness on highest reverse details. Toning: light pearly gray with scattered gold highlights. References: RIC IV 554; RSC 56; BMCRE 49; mint Rome. Issued during the joint reign of Septimius Severus and his son Caracalla, this denarius promoted Julia Domna’s public role as mater castrorum (“mother of the camps”) and guardian of imperial fortune. The reverse personification of Fortuna with rudder and cornucopia underscored stability and prosperity amid ongoing military campaigns against Parthia and internal rivals. Silver denarii of Julia Domna circulated widely throughout the empire, reflecting her elevated status and the Severan dynasty’s use of female portraiture to reinforce dynastic legitimacy and civic confidence.
