Description

Decius, Antoninianus, silver, reign 249-251, minted 249-251, weight 3.6 g, diameter 23 mm. Obverse: IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG; radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: PANNONIAE; the two personifications of Upper and Lower Pannonia, veiled, standing front, both looking left, each holding a military standard, the right-hand figure raising her hand. Strike: hammer-struck on a standard imperial flan with usual die-axis alignment. Toning: generally light grey with occasional pale gold highlights. References: RIC IV Trajan Decius 23. The issue commemorates the provinces of Upper and Lower Pannonia, where Decius had previously commanded legions and secured decisive support for his elevation to the throne. By depicting the twin Pannonian personifications holding military standards, the coinage affirmed provincial loyalty and military cooperation at a time when the empire faced Gothic invasions and internal unrest during the mid-third-century crisis.
