Description
Philip I, Antoninianus, silver, reign 244-249, minted 244-249, weight 3.90 g, diameter 22 mm. Obverse: legend IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG; radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: legend ANNONA AVGG; Annona standing left holding corn-ears and cornucopiae, modius with corn-ears at foot. Strike: mid-third-century Roman production, generally well-centered with occasional die wear producing flat high points. Toning: light silver-grey with possible traces of original surface wash, typical moderate circulation lustre loss. References: RIC IV Philip I 28C; standard catalogues for Rome issues of 244-249. Issued during Philip I’s reign, this antoninianus belongs to a series promoting Rome’s grain supply through the Annona type, reinforcing public confidence in regular distributions sourced from North Africa and Egypt. The coinage formed part of larger fiscal measures that included gradual silver debasement to fund military operations along frontier zones while maintaining urban food subsidies. Its imagery and metal content illustrate the economic and logistical priorities of the Roman state in the mid-third century.
