Description

This coin was part of a propaganda campaign. Maximinus II was one of the last pagan emperors to actively resist Christianity. By featuring traditional Roman gods like Tyche and Apollo with the word "Sancto" (Holy), he was attempting to revitalize pagan worship and provide a religious alternative to the Christian movement. Shortly after these were minted, the Edict of Milan (313 AD) was issued, ending the official persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire.

These coins are historically significant because they were struck in Antioch (modern-day Turkey) during a period of intense religious tension between traditional Roman paganism and the rising tide of Christianity.
