Description

Macedon under Roman Rule, Tetradrachm, AR, minted in Amphipolis, circa 150 BC. Weighing 17.06g and measuring approximately 31mm in diameter. The obverse features a draped bust of Artemis facing right, adorned with a stephane, accompanied by a bow and quiver over the shoulder, all encased within a rondo of a Macedonian shield, intricately ornamented with stars set inside double crescents. The reverse inscription reads MAKEΔONΩN ΠΡOTHΣ. Noted reference: BMC 8 var. This coin presents a well-centered strike with substantial detail remaining on both faces. This tetradrachm was issued during a period when Macedonia was a Roman province following the defeat of the Macedonian Kingdom in 168 BC. This coin type represents an important numismatic link between Greek artistry and Roman authority, reflecting both the transition and continuity in local civic traditions under the oversight of the Roman Empire. The bust of Artemis and the Macedonian shield motif exhibit the lingering local cultural influence within Roman-dominated territories.
