Description

Maximian, Tetradrachm, Billon, reign AD 286-305. Minted in Alexandria. Weight: 7.40g, typical diameter: 23mm. Obverse features a laureate bust of Maximian, right, with the inscription "ΜΑΞΙΜΙΑΝΟϹ ϹΕΒ" surrounding. The reverse shows the legend "L Ζ," indicating the regnal year seven. The coin exhibits typical strike characteristics for Alexandrian issues of this period, with moderate wear especially evident on the higher points. This tetradrachm from the Alexandrian mint highlights the economic strategies during the Tetrarchy, a system established by Diocletian to manage the Roman Empire's vast territories through division of power. The coinage from Alexandria was distinct in style and function, serving both as everyday currency within Egypt and as a statement of political allegiance to the ruling Tetrarch. The billon composition indicates controlled debasement to balance economy and circulation demands. These coins provide insight into the complex monetary reforms of the late Roman Empire.
