Description
Septimius Severus, Denarius, Silver (AR), Reign 193-211 AD, Minted in Rome, Weight 2.37g, Diameter 19mm. The obverse features the laureate head of Septimius Severus facing right, inscribed with the legend "L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP III." The reverse showcases Victory advancing left, holding a wreath and palm branch, accompanied by the inscription "P M TR P II COS II." Well-struck, the coin exhibits sharp details on both the obverse and reverse, indicative of early minting techniques during Severus' reign. Referenced in RIC IV Septimius Severus 34 (denarius). Historically, this coin was minted during a crucial period of transition and consolidation for the Roman Empire under the rule of Septimius Severus. Following the Year of the Five Emperors, where Rome witnessed a rapid succession of rulers, Severus emerged as a stabilizing force, establishing the Severan dynasty. His reign marked significant military expansions and administrative reforms, further securing the empire’s frontiers and enriching Rome’s cultural and architectural legacy. Coins such as this denarius circulated broadly, serving both as currency and a vehicle for imperial propaganda, promoting Severus' image and achievements.
