Description

Vespasian, Tetradrachm, AR, reign of Vespasian, 69-79 AD, minted in Seleucia Pieria. Weight: 13.17g, Diameter: 25mm. The obverse features a laureate head of Vespasian facing right, inscribed with "ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑΤΩΡ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ ϹΕΒΑϹΤΟϹ ΟΥΕϹΠΑϹΙΑΝΟϹ," denoting Vespasian's position as emperor and revered leader. The reverse depicts an eagle standing on a thunderbolt, with wings spread, enclosed by the inscription "ΕΤΟΥϹ ΝΕΟΥ ΙΕΡΟΥ Γ," marking the year of minting in Greek numerals. This coin is sharply struck with well-defined details on both the obverse and reverse. Referenced as RPC 1972. This tetradrachm reflects the provincial authority exercised by Rome in the Eastern territories during Vespasian's reign. Serving both as currency and a tool of propaganda, it emphasized Vespasian's legitimacy and divine endorsement amidst the recent upheaval of the Year of the Four Emperors. Seleucia Pieria was a strategic minting location, chosen for its proximity to pivotal Roman territories and its role in the economic integration of Eastern provinces into the Roman Empire.
