Description
Lysimachos, Tetradrachm, Silver (AR), reign of Lysimachos, 305-281 BC, Magnesia on the Meander. Weight: 16.52g, Diameter: 32mm. The obverse features a dynamic and finely detailed bust of Alexander the Great adorned with a diadem and Ammon's Horns, symbolizing his divine association. On the reverse, the inscription ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ is present, accompanied by a seated Athena holding Nike. The coin is notably well-struck with sharp high relief, capturing intricate details on both obverse and reverse. Reference: Thompson, Lysimachus 115. Lysimachos, once a bodyguard of Alexander the Great, became ruler of Thrace, and later expanded his control to Macedonia and parts of Asia Minor. The depiction of Alexander with features of the god Ammon on these coins signifies Lysimachos' efforts to legitimize his reign through association with Alexander's divine right to rule. Coins from this mint represent a fusion of Hellenistic artistry and the political propaganda of successor kingdoms in the wake of Alexander's empire.
