Description

Salonina, Antoninianus, Billon, Reign of Salonina (253-268 AD), minted in Antioch. Weight: 3.87g, Diameter: 23mm. The obverse features a radiate and draped bust of Empress Salonina facing right, with the legend "SALONINA AVG." The reverse depicts Juno standing left, holding a patera and scepter, with a peacock at her feet, accompanied by the legend "IVNO REGINA." Struck with good centering and even wear, the coin is cataloged under RIC V Salonina 30. Historically, Salonina was the wife of Emperor Gallienus and served as Augusta during a turbulent period of the Roman Empire marked by military and political instability. Her coinage, including this Antoninianus, often emphasized divine and protective themes, reflecting contemporary concerns with stability and continuity amidst ongoing crises. The representation of Juno, the protector of the Roman state, underscores these themes.
