Description

Augustus, AE18, minted in Antioch, 13/14 AD. Weight: 8.14g, typical diameter: 18mm. The obverse features a laureate head of Zeus facing right, showcasing fine details in the beard and laurel. The reverse inscription reads ΕΠΙ ΣΙΛΑΝΟΥ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΕΩΝ with ΔΜ in the field, displaying sharp and legible letters. This coin is well-struck with an even patina, referencing RPC I, 4269. This coin was minted during the reign of Augustus, the first emperor of the Roman Empire, in the city of Antioch which played a critical role in Roman provincial administration and military strategy in the Eastern Mediterranean. The presence of Zeus on the obverse reflects the syncretic cultural influences in the region, where Greek and Roman traditions intermingled. The inscription commemorates Silanus, an official in Antioch, indicating the city's allegiance to Rome and its emperor in a period of consolidation and peace known as the Pax Romana.
