Description
Roman Republic, AE Provincial, Year 272 (41/40 BC), Apameia, Syria. Weight: 7.18g, Diameter: 22mm. Obverse features the bust of helmeted Athena facing right, her expression austere and determined. The reverse is inscribed with ΑΠΑΜΕΩΝ ΤΗΣ ΙΕΡΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΑΣΥΛΟΥ, ΒΟΣ, encircling the depiction of a cult image or city view, referencing Apameia's sacred and immune status. This specimen has a clear strike, with well-preserved detail on the obverse and reverse. References include RPC I, 4334. The coin was minted in the backdrop of late Roman Republic turbulence, specifically during the power struggles leading up to the fall of the Republic. Apameia, a critical Hellenistic city, was known for its strategic location and religious significance, serving as a cultural and economic hub in ancient Syria. This coin represents Roman authority integrating with regional identities, evident in the fusion of Roman and Hellenistic elements in the coin's iconography and inscriptions.
