Description

Nero, tetradrachm, AR (billon), reign AD 54–68, Alexandria, regnal year 13 (AD 66/67), 12.66 g, 24 mm. Obverse with laureate head of Nero right; Greek legend ΝΕΡΩ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒ ΓΕΡ ΑΥ, with date L ΙΓ. Reverse with laureate head of Divus Augustus right; legend ΘΕΟΣ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ (“Divine Augustus”). Struck in the standard Alexandrian tetradrachm fabric of the mid-first century AD, with the regnal date integral to the type. Reference: RPC I 5294. The type documents the continuation of the Alexandrian regnal-year dating system under Nero and the prominence of the imperial cult in Roman Egypt; by pairing Nero’s portrait with the deified Augustus named on the reverse, the coin aligns the reigning emperor with the founder of the Principate and reflects the official status of Augustus as a divinity within provincial monetary iconography.
