Description

The reign of Hadrian (117–138 AD) was defined by consolidation, defense, and cultural patronage across the Roman Empire. Abandoning overextended conquests, he secured the frontiers through fortifications such as Hadrian’s Wall in Britain, while traveling extensively to oversee provincial administration. A philhellene and patron of the arts, his rule blended military discipline with architectural and cultural flourishing, reinforcing stability during the height of the Pax Romana.

The inner legend, Vota Publica, refers to collective vows and prayers of the Roman public for the state and emperor. Note Pietas, personified. This is the depiction of the one of the main Roman virtues, filial piety and devotion to the fatherland. She is standing at the right, with her hands raised to the sky, in prayer herself.
