Description
Trajan (AD 98-117)
Denarius, Rome (114-7) (19 mm) (3.40 g)
Obverse: Sharp portrait of Trajan featuring his distinctive "straight-hair" military style
Reverse: Providentia (Divine Foresight) standing left, leaning on a column and pointing toward a globe at her feet. This symbolizes the Emperor’s wisdom in securing the empire's future
Struck during Trajan's final years, this coin serves as a victory monument in silver. The title Parthico commemorates his successful campaigns in the East, where he pushed Rome’s borders to their furthest extent. Providentia on the reverse is particularly significant. As Trajan aged without a biological son, the imagery of "Foresight" reassured the public that he was carefully choosing a successor—ultimately Hadrian—to ensure the Empire remained stable long after his death.
