Description
Lysimachos, Tetradrachm, Silver (AR), reign 305-281 BC, minted in Lampsakos. Weight: 16.79g, Diameter: 30mm. The obverse features a diademed head of the deified Alexander the Great facing right, adorned with the horn of Ammon, symbolizing his proclaimed divine status. The reverse bears the inscription "ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ," denoting "of King Lysimachos," accompanied by Athena seated left, holding Nike and resting an arm on a shield, with a spear leaning against the throne. Struck on a well-centered flan with slight evidence of wear, usual for its age. References include HGC 3 1750b.
Historically, this coin reflects the tumultuous period following Alexander the Great's death, known as the Hellenistic era, during which his former generals and companions, the Diadochi, divided his empire. Lysimachos, one such Diadochus, initially ruler of Thrace, later extended his territory over large parts of Asia Minor. Coins from his reign, especially those featuring Alexander, served as tools of propaganda, reinforcing Lysimachos' legitimacy and connection to Alexander's legacy in the territories he sought to control.
