Perhaps the most talented ancient coin engraver, Kimon gave the local goddess Arethusa the abbreviated label of “saviour” of Syracuse on his Facing Head tetradrachm at the end of the Fifth century BC. In the post-Alexander time of Agathocles, Arethusa had been replaced by Artemis, a higher deity worshipped by the entire Greek world.
