Description
Nerva, Denarius, Silver, 96-98, Rome mint. Weight: 3.56g, Diameter: 18mm. The obverse features the laureate head of Nerva facing right, surrounded by the legend "IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P COS III P P". The reverse showcases the figure of Aequitas, the personification of fairness and equality, standing left, holding scales in her right hand and a cornucopia in her left, with the inscription "AEQVITAS AVGVST". This coin is finely struck, with clear details visible on both sides, exhibiting minimal wear, which is typical of this type. Referenced as RIC II Nerva 13 (denarius).
Nerva's brief reign marked the beginning of the long-stable period of the Five Good Emperors in Roman history. Despite his short rule, from 96 to 98 AD, he is credited with restoring stability after the tyrannical Domitian, implementing measures favoring justice and fairness, as symbolized by the depiction of Aequitas on this denarius. His reign laid the groundwork for the successful administrations of his successors, notably facilitating the transition of imperial power without bloodshed—an innovation in Roman governance at the time.
