Description

Celtic, Obol?, Gold. Danube or Pannonian Celts, 3rd-2nd Century BC. Weight: 0.67g, Diameter: approximately 12mm. The obverse features what appears to be a bust of Apollo, though the render details are stylized in typical Celtic fashion, rendering absolute identification challenging. The reverse depicts Nike standing to the left, gracefully holding a wreath. Both designs are clear but exhibit a slightly imprecise strike, indicative of the manual minting processes of the time. This coin remains unpublished and is struck from the same dies as the only other known example, coin 265. These coins emerge from the Celtic tribes along the Danube or in the region of Pannonia, reflecting a period where Hellenistic influences merged with indigenous artistry. This fusion illustrates the cross-cultural interactions along ancient trade routes and the adoption and adaptation of Greek motifs by Celtic artisans. Such coins are pivotal in understanding the economic and cultural exchanges in Pre-Roman Central Europe, as well as the spread of coinage practices beyond traditional Greek and Roman spheres. Only two examples are known, both present in this auction, underlining their rarity and numismatic significance.
