Description

Danube Celts, 2nd-1st Century BCE, Drachm, AR, Kugelwange type. Weighing 2.26g and measuring approximately 15mm in diameter. The obverse features a laureate bust of Zeus, rendered in a stylized, abstract form typical of Celtic artistry. On the reverse, a prancing horse is depicted, with a wheel above, symbolizing motion and warfare. The coin is well-struck, exhibiting clear details despite its age, with minimal wear that does not detract from its legibility. Referenced in Lanz 458-9.

This coin represents the Danube Celts, a group of tribes who resided in the areas surrounding the Danube River during the Late Iron Age. Their coinage reflects both the influence of Greek numismatic art and their own distinctive artistic traditions. The imagery of Zeus denotes interaction with Hellenistic cultures, while the horse and wheel are emblematic of the Celts' chariot warfare. Coins like this drachm are vital for understanding the cultural and economic exchanges between the Celts and neighboring civilizations.
