Description
Hadrian, AE19, Roman Provincial, minted in Alexandria for the Panopolite Nomos, Year 11, 117-138 CE. Weight: 5.45g, Diameter: 19mm. The obverse features the laureate head of Hadrian right, inscribed with the Greek legend ΑΥΤ ΚΑΙ ΤΡΑΙ ΑΔΡΙΑ ϹΕΒ, signifying "Emperor Caesar Trajan Hadrianus Augustus." The reverse depicts a figure standing, holding a scepter, with the Greek inscription ΠΑΝΟ, L ΙΑ, indicating the eleventh year of Hadrian's reign and acknowledging the Panopolite administrative division. The strike displays good centering with minor unevenness on the reverse. Referenced as RPC III, 6333.
Hadrian's reign is noted for its consolidation and fortification of the Roman Empire's boundaries. Unlike his predecessor Trajan, who expanded Rome's territories, Hadrian focused on maintaining stability and cultural integration within the provinces. This coin, minted in the Egyptian region of Alexandria, represents the widespread influence and administrative reach of Rome under his rule, illustrating not only the Emperor's image but also the complexities of local governance within the Empire.
