Valens, Solidus, gold. Reign of Valens, 364-378 AD, minted in Milan. Weight: 3.94 g, Diameter: 21 mm.

Obverse features the bust of Emperor Valens, shown facing right, draped, and cuirassed, with the inscription "D N VALENS P F AVG" encircling. The reverse depicts the emperor standing holding a globe and a labarum, symbolizing the "Restorer of the Republic" with the legend "RESTITVTOR REIPVBLICAE". The piece demonstrates a well-centered and sharp strike, typical of the high-quality craftsmanship of the Milan mint during this period. Referenced as RIC IX Mediolanum 2B. Valens ruled as Eastern Roman Emperor from 364 to 378 AD, co-ruling with his brother Valentinian I. His administration was marked by significant military campaigns and a focus on internal stability within the empire. Valens is notably remembered for his role in the Gothic War and his ultimate defeat at the Battle of Adrianople, which highlighted the mounting pressures Rome faced from barbarian incursions during late antiquity. This solidus commemorates his imperial authority and efforts to restore and maintain the unity of the Roman state.
