Description
Eucratides, drachm, Silver (AR), Reign of Eucratides I, 171-145 BC, Minted in Paropamisadai or Gandhara. Weight: 4.39g The obverse features a diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Eucratides facing right, wearing a crested helmet adorned with a bull’s horn and ear, indicative of his regal and martial prowess. The reverse bears the inscription BAΣIΛEΩΣ MEΓAΛOΥ EYKPATIΔOY, translating to "of Great King Eucratides."
The strike is well-centered, with appreciable detail preserved on both the obverse and reverse, maintaining excellent overall fidelity to the original engraving. Referenced in Bopearachchi 7I. Eucratides I was one of the most prominent and powerful Greco-Bactrian kings, known for significantly expanding the territory of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom, which covered parts of modern-day Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. His reign marked the high point of Hellenistic influence in the region, as he challenged existing power structures, including the Indo-Greeks to the east. The crested helmet on the coin symbolizes his military strength and leadership, reinforcing his status as "The Great" in numismatic history.
