Description

Bronze follis of Tiberius II Constantine struck at Antioch (Theoupolis), identifiable by the mintmark THEUP in exergue. Well-centred example with clear ANNO II (579-580).

This issue is characteristic for its heavily blundered Greek legend, often preserving the fragment ΠTINOC TIANTAPPIV, as visible on this specimen.  The Antioch mint is well known for these irregular and partially corrupted inscriptions during this period.

Brown patina with earthen deposits. Typical fabric for Antiochene bronze of the late 6th century. A representative and historically interesting eastern mint issue from the short reign of Tiberius II.
